A usable photography contract needs five things at minimum: the shoot date and deliverables, payment terms including any deposit, cancellation and rescheduling policy, usage rights for the images, and both parties' signatures.

What a contract needs to hold up
- Shoot date, location and what's being delivered (file count, format, timeline)
- Payment terms — deposit amount, when the balance is due, accepted methods
- Cancellation and rescheduling policy, including any non-refundable portion
- Usage rights — who can use the images, where, and for how long
- Signatures from both parties, dated
Where studios usually go wrong
The most common gap isn't a missing clause — it's a vague one. "Photos delivered within a reasonable timeframe" isn't enforceable; "within 6 weeks of the shoot date" is. The same goes for usage rights: "client may use the photos" leaves out whether that includes commercial use, print, or social media — spell it out.
